Frequently Asked Questions

What is i.c.stars |* milwaukee?

i.c.stars is an immersive technology-based leadership training program for promising young adults. Begun in Chicago in 1999, the program expanded to Milwaukee in 2018.

What will I receive?

i.c.stars provides you with two years of support to achieve your goals. The program begins a paid, 16-week internship that includes intensive training in technology, business and leadership skills. Following this structured, four-month internship, participants enter a residency status with i.c.stars for continued networking, career services and support.

Why do people participate in i.c.stars?

i.c.stars will launch you on a career in technology—a growth industry with high income potential. Since 1999, more than 400 stars have graduated from the program. We have a record of success:

  • 90% job placement rate upon graduating i.c.stars
  • 400% average increase in income (from approximately $11,000/year before i.c.stars to $44,000/year after i.c.stars
  • 81% rate of continuing careers in the tech field

Who is the program for?

i.c.stars was created to provide career opportunities for promising talent in the inner city (“i.c.”). We cultivate talent that is currently under-represented in the tech sector, including women, low-income young adults, and people of color.

i.c.stars is designed for those who have innate qualities for leadership but who have lacked the opportunity to begin a career. The program is not intended for professionals seeking a career change. We encourage you to contact us and attend an information session to learn if i.c.stars is for you!

Is there an age requirement?

The minimum age is 18. There is no upper age limit.

What will I do during the internship?

The 4-month internship is the core of the i.c.stars program. You will receive technical training, including Javascript, HTML, CSS, C#, Asp.net Core and SQL. Interns work in teams to respond to a real-world project need from an industry partner.

Interns also enjoy business and leadership skills development, including High Tea: a series of networking presentations from industry leaders and executives.

The internship is fun and engaging, and it is also intensive. Interns must attend 8AM to 8PM, Monday through Friday, for 16 weeks and agree to an "On Time, No Absence" policy.

Why is the internship a 12-hour day? Can I do a shorter internship?
The internship is structured to provide all the tools, training and resources to launch a career in a relatively condensed 16 week period. For those that can structure their lives to take advantage of the four month internship, i.c.stars will open up a life-changing opportunity. Increased income, advanced technology skills, and a strong network of industry professionals provide our graduates with the opportunities and support needed to make the changes they want in their life and in the community.
Will I get paid?

During the 4-month internship, you will be paid a stipend of $150 per week to help defray food and transportation expenses.
